Word rate and quality are low, but it's a good launching pad and place to practice. They are horribly understaffed with one top editor, one constantly rotating assistant editor, and one editorial intern. This is not the place where an editor will make your work better. Fact checking is essentially non-existent and they will often change an article and rush to print before checking with you first. I know a lot of their writers and this happens to everyone, until you put your foot down and demand to see last version, etc. Good people, bad execution.
