Editors have a bit of leeway on payment, such as paying a flat fee in the event that a story gets cut significantly during editing. At $1 a word they're relatively easy to work with, looking to facilitate getting your story into print rather than find an excuse to kill it. Prepare for dickish and indecipherable comments during the final edit. Turns out they don't mean anything. As long as you have a thick skin, the story will fly.
